RESUMO

The aim of this study is to consider the experiences of HIV positive mothers who have been asked by medical caregivers to refrain from the practice of breastfeeding. These women are patients of the special public health care system in the city of Porto Alegre, capital of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The objects of our analysis are the daily social representations and strategies developed by these mothers in response to this restriction regarding ¿natural¿ feeding. Our hypothesis is that HIV positive mothers regularly face awkward situations that arise not only because their illness but also because of the advice given by caregivers in order to protect the health of mother and child. One of our first conclusions is that, for these women, breast milk is indeed seen as the most adequate form of nutrition for their newborn babies because of supposed nutritional and immunological properties. This shared perception has been further reinforced by public health campaigns that encourage breastfeeding by associating the practice with concepts such as love, affection and health. In their homes, they feel the pressure of these same values and expectations being reproduced by relatives and friends. Thus, we observe breast milk transcending bodies and transversing social spaces to include family and society in these mother¿s very private.
