RESUMO

The etnopharmacology researches are today important registration and documentation tools of the empiric uses of medicinal plants in traditional communities, generating useful knowledge to the development of new medicines, to the conservation of the biodiversity and to the valorization of the knowledge and of the local culture. In this sense, it was aimed to recover and record the information on the popular medicinal species used, with respect to therapeutic use, in the city of Rosario da Limeira, MG and facilitate community access to information more systematized. A survey was done along the urban population in the rural communities of the municipality concerning the medicinal species used by the local population in popular medicine. The following methodologies were employed: participant observation and semi-structured interviews with issues relating to the plant and interviewed cited, conducted with 15 informants-key, adults of both sexes, selected for knowledge of the medical use of species. Data were collected between January and March 2007. The interviews were recorded with the aid of recorder avoiding loss of information. It was raised 60 species belonging to 33 families. The greatest number of species were: Asteraceae (31.0%), Lamiaceae (28.0%), Rutaceae (8.0%) and Bignoniaceae (8.0%) . Among the species, 56.0% are cultivated and 44.0% are spontaneous. The plant part more used in the preparations was the leaves (67.7%), and the most common form of preparation was the infusion (60.3%). Regarding the knowledge on the use of medicinal plants, about 73.0% of the key informants were sex women. On the risk of Phytotherapy and care of using medicinal plants properly, 93.3% replied that the plants, poorly recommended or prepared, may cause some type of toxic effect. The medicinal plants are cultivated and collected throughout the year. The conventional medicine and Phytotherapy coexist in the city. The knowledge is transmitted orally, acquired through: observation of older people that adopted Phytotherapy, the use by themselves the indication to patients, as well as of plants collection. The informants are wise people on the local flora, and do intensive use.
