RESUMO

The solar radiation reflected by targets on the earth s surface interacts with the atmosphere before being detected by the satellite sensors. In the visible wavelenght region, scattering by molecules and aerosols predominates on the interaction of the radiation with the atmosphere. In addition to attenuation, this interaction also contributes with diffuse radiation, thus changing the quality and quantity of radiation arriving at the satellite sensor. The purpose of this work is to correct the multispectral scanner (MSS) data of LANDSAT satellite for atmospheric interference, using LOWTRAN-3 program and the analytical solution of the radiative transfer equation. LOWTRAN-3 is based on a semi-empirical model and calculates the transmittance for a given atmospheres or utilizes a local vertical atmospheric profile given radiosound and two aerosol models. This method was used correct the LANDSAT MSS data of Brasilia. It improved the contrast between different natural targets. In addition, the corrected images of two different dates were more similar than the original ones. This method was also applied to correct the LANDSAT MSS data of Ribeirão Preto. The corrected image gave a clasification accuracy of sugar cane about 10% higher as compared to the original images. Some suggestions for improving this method for correcting LANDSAT MSS data are given.
