RESUMO

It was evaluated the fertility potentia} of 54 men, between 19 and 42 years old, submitted to unilateral orchiectomy. AlI of them had contralateral scrotal testis with normal volume and consistence. The patients were divided according to the etiology purpose of the orchiectomy in 4 groups: group I cryptorchidism, 19 cases; group 2 - testicular torsion, 14 cases: group 3 -testicular cancer, 12 cases; group 4 - accidental, 9 cases. The period between surgery and seminal analysis varied from 6 months to 30 years (mean 5 years). AU semen samples were examined at the same laboratory (Andrology Department of University of Hamburg, FRG - Pror. Dr. C. Schirren). No difference was observed among the groups of patients, regarding the sperm concentration. 52,6% in group 1, 57,5% in group 2, 50% in group 3 and 55,5% in group 4 presented less than 20 millionlml spermatozoa. We concluded that unilateral orchiectomy leads to a considerable decrease of male fertility potential, independently of the primary etiology
