RESUMO

Nowadays the motorcycle has become a very popular vehicle and also a transport mode with the highest accident rate. The aim of this study is to draw up a psychological and situational profile of motorcyclists with accidents (experimental group) comparing them with motorcyclists without accidents (control group) in the city of Rondonópolis MT. Initially the following hypotheses were proposed: 1 - The motorcyclists with accidents present more risky behavior, such as: speeding, non use of helmet, disobedience to traffic laws, alcohol abuse, dangerous overtaking, and so on; 2 The persons with a higher result on the traits of vulnerability, psychosocial maladjustment, anxiety and depression, presenting more risky behavior in driving, and also are more prone to involve themselves in accidents To confirm or not these hypotheses following instruments were used: semi-directed interview for the survey of the data divided in the following categories: (personal data, description of the accident, references of the perception of the motorcycle and of the traffic laws and references of the motorcyclist behavior); the EFN (Factorial scale of Emotional adjustment/ neuroticism) personality test with the aim to draw up the profile of the motorcyclist with and without accidents and an attention test of concentrated and discriminative attention within traffic situations to evaluate some difference in this factor between the two groups. The results obtained show that the motorcyclists in general have a higher rate of depression. All of them are conscious tha t motorcyclists are more prone to traffic accidents, but even so the great majority utilizes this vehicle for work and for leisure, because it is the only transport mode they have. Within the Experimental Group, the majority assumes the responsibility for the accident, which happened because they had ingested alcoholic beverage before the accident. It is clear that great part of the motorcyclists had forgotten the information they received when they obtained their divers license, and also the information they obtained when submitted to the psychological tests. The control group presented a level of vulnerability superior to the experimental group what may lead to the supposition that this group has lower auto-esteem compared with the experimental group. Re lating to the psychosocial mal-adjustment, the anxiety and the depression, the situation changed, because the experimental group scored higher than the control group that identify themselves as more aggressive, more hostile, more emotionally instable and with low expectancy for the future. In relation to the attention and discrimination test the experimental group presented a higher percentage than the control group, which goes against the second hypothesis. The other two hypotheses were onfirmed.
