RESUMO

The current study is about the teaching-learning process of the Social Studies in Adult Basic Education (EBA), focusing on the concepts, the principles, and the techniques developed within that subject. The main goal of this study is to know how the teaching-learning process of Social Studies has been developed in Cape Verde, mainly in Praia city. Our study tries to describe the documents that support the above referred process as well the pedagogic techniques that the teachers use in the class, on which was made a critical appreciation. Adult Basic Education in Cape Verde was organized in two phases until the generalization of Education Reform, which occurred in 1994. Since that time, Adult Basic Education has been developed in three phases. In the first and second phases there are only Portuguese language and Mathematics as subjects, and to the third phase it was added another subject called Integrated Sciences. During the first and second phases, the contents of Social Studies are taught in Portuguese and Mathematics in an interdisciplinary perspective, while in the third phase the contents of Social Studies are worked in an autonomous way in the subject Integrated Sciences. This paper was developed based on classroom observations made on two classrooms in the third phase of Adult Basic Education
