RESUMO

The present work analyses the role of social networks in the establishment of solidarity actions towards people affected by HIV and AIDS. The main purpose of this study consists in analyzing the standard links between people living with HIV and/or AIDS and demonstrate the implication of their significant social relation networks activated in the control of HIV/AIDS, in the design of organized and collective actions, as response to AIDS epidemics and the emergence of collective identity, fundamental factor for the insertion of affected people into convivial public spheres. This is an explorative and descriptive research, with a qualitative character, carried out with 12 patients, men and women, adults, who were under treatment in the delegacia de saÃde, a station of health in Praia, Cape Verde, an Island situated in the Atlantic Ocean at 450 Km from the occidental African coast. The results showed that although Cape Verde possesses experiences in network organizations at the level of the civil society as well as the international cooperation that shape and influence the way the Capverdian society have responded to HIV/AIDS epidemics, organizing people affected by HIV/AIDS into network consists one of the weaknesses of the community and non governmental actions towards AIDS in Cape Verde. The reconstitution of egocentric networks of patients interviewed demonstrates the low organization and structuring potentials of collective actions in existing networks
