RESUMO

This work consisted on applying the methodology of small groups teaching, trying to solve some problems involving the Biochemistry teaching at the Universidade de Mogi das Cruzes. The small group teaching strategy was applied in five different introductory courses of Biochemistry - Pharmacy, Medical School and three groups of Biomedicine. Teachers and students didn t have any previous experience in the methodology. To provide the students an adequate study guide, course contents were thoroughly rewritten respecting the educational objectives and presenting the students questions and problems to be solved, 33% ofthe courses activities were dedicated to this new methodology and the rest to lectures and lab classes. After an introductory lecture on the subject to be studied, the students were separated into groups of five and started working with the subject for about three hours. The students responses to this new methodology were evaluated using the following procedures. 1. Questionnaires applied during the school year of 1997 and first semester of 1998; 2. Direct observation of groups; 3. Semi-structured interviews. The results obtained from the questionnaires point out that the students would rather take part in groups than attending lectures; prefer studying in groups to work alone; ..considered that group discussions make learning more effective; wouldn t like to return to conventional methodology. The direct observation of the groups as well as the interviews showed enormous difficulty in understanding Biochemical concepts. lnterviews pointed out that, with conventional methodologies, teachers and students were very distant from each other and students didn t get along so well among themselves. Otherwise, working with small groups was extremely positive in overcoming these problems
