RESUMO

The splash is a phenomenon that has aroused a lot of interest since a long time ago, mainly due to the beauty of the structures produced by the impact of a drop against a liquid surface. Since splash occurs in a short period of time (miliseconds), a fast technique is necessary to record images. Using a CCD camera and a software for image digitalization, the present work aims the study of morphological changes in the splash when the liquid contains a drag reduction agent: the presence of small amounts (ppm) of polymers in the solutions provokes a considerable drag reduction, when it is submitted to turbulent flow. Using the images of splash structures, known possible to study the effect of the polymer poly(ethylene oxide), PEO, the most efficient drag reduction agent, on splash structures, as well as the effects related to potential and superficial energies. It was first time that splash structures can be used quantitatively to study the drag reduction effect.
