RESUMO

The application of air-lift reactors in wastewater treatment is very attractive, when compared to the conventional ones, as they show high air to water oxygen transfer rates from, with great possibility of treating wastewater with high pollutants concentration with moderate costs. The use of venturis and centrifugal pumps as means of promoting air-lift reactors aeration, as a form of avoiding compressors use which are expensive machines, can turn the use of these reactors more advantageous, since those are equipments of low cost in comparison with the compressors. In this sense, this work aims at studing the effect of application of a venturi in the feeding tube of the air-lift reactor, as a form of promoting its aeration, as well as to determine the mass transfer coefficient and efficiency of the aeration unit. With the purpose of increasing the mass transfer coefficient, pieces were inserted in the reactor s feeding tube to reduce its section area and promote the liquid and air bubbles shearing and, consequent1y, to increase the interfacial area of mass transfer. The experiments were accomplished with different liquid and air rates in three different temperatures, with and without shearing pieces into the feeding tube. The dissolved oxygen concentration were measured by means of a polarograph probe. In some experimental conditions, with the use of shearing pieces in the reactor s feeding tube, the value of the oxygen transfer coefficient doubled and the aeration unit efficiency reached values up to 1,5 kg O2/kWh for water. Although the experiments had been made to study the air to water oxygen transfer, other applications like carbonation of beverages, cane juice sulphiting, etc can be done by this system
