RESUMO

The treatment of chronic intractable pain has been studied for many years. Surgical lesions or sections of nerve tracts, be sides the inherent surgical and psychological risks, proved to be inefficient and the results are unpredictable. The use of drugs has the problem of addiction, making it not recommended for long application. Term Physiological studies allowed us to design a "Neural Stimulator" for selective transcutaneous stimulation of the large nerve fibers to inhibit the pain by the mechanism proposed in the "Gate Control Theory" of pain by Melzack &Wall in 1965. The clinical results proved the efficiency of the utili¬zation of electrical stimulation for the afferent control of pain, without the necessity of surgeries and addicting drugs.
