RESUMO

The rehabilitation of spinal cord injuried (SCl) subjects is based on Hybrid Systems (mechanical orthoses and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation - NMES)with Sensors for Automatic Gait Control (SCAG) external footswitches, patellar transducer. During the gait cycle the SCAGs detects the swing and the stance phases while a Central of Automatic Control(CAC)allows the stimulation of one leg for the step at the same time that enables the other to supporting. This stimulation occurs as soon as the correct spatial position of the patient is detected. The system consists of three phases:DETECTION,PROCESSING and EXECUTION. During detection,it occurs the conversion of a mechanical strengh signal of the monitored points to an analogical electric signal by means of the sensors (strain gages and m1cro-sw1tches); dur1_g the processing, the comparat1ve analysis between theoretical and detected physic parameters, pre-seted for each pat1ent, will be able to produce the control commands for the next phase;in the execution, the Artificial Arc-Reflex stimulus in the supporting leg and the stimulation on the free leg will restore the gait to the patient. The rehabilitation of patients using this technique was successfull, showing a promising future for the use of Hybrid Systems with NMES and SCAGs in Rehabilitation Engineering
