RESUMO

The present work aims at establishing the relationship between the forest dendrometric parameters as well as volume and biomass from stand implanted forest and the interferometric and radiometric SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) image response, using multivariable regression techniques. The SAR images, X and P bands, from OrbiSAR-1 sensor, were acquired from the study area in Pindamonhangaba/SP region, featured by a 6.1 years old Eucalyptus saligna culture. The results pointed out that the stand volume was highly correlated with the interferometric height logarithm (LogHint), obtained from the difference between the digital elevation models employing interferometry in X and P bands, whereas the diameter of breast height (DBH) presented a better relationship with the combination of interferometric coherence in the VV polarization (CohPvv) and with the LogHint. The commercial and total vegetation heights, similar to the DBH, were better explained by the combination of CohPVV and LogHint variables. Due to the fact that biomass and vegetation height relationship was not linear, the vegetation biomass was better explained by the combination of Hint2 and CSI index. The results showed that the population of individuals whose structure was predominantly cylindrical and vertically oriented caused a higher interaction with the vertical polarization. The P band radiometry efficiency was not as good as the CohPVV and LogHint to estimate DBH, vegetation height and volume. However, to estimate the vegetation biomass, it was necessary to use the radiometry (CSI index) associated with the interferometry (Hint2). All the regression models obtained 84 to 88% determination coefficient in relation to the study area forest inventory.
