RESUMO

The reservoirs represent the main water source for the semi-arid region of the Brazilian Northeast. However, the presence of water doesn?t mean the lack of thirst, due to the action of various processes that affect the quality of the stored water. Among these, there?s the salinization, responsible for the ions accumulation in the water, making it inadequate for human and animal consumption and for irrigation. The soil present in the catchment areas of the reservoirs have a fundamental role in the process of salinization, acting as a supplier of ions, where their concentration is enlarged by the climatic factors, for they remove water and maintain the salt. In this work, the soil participation of the water salinization process of two reservoirs in the experimental catchment of the Cedro River, located in the semi-arid of Bahia, is discussed. The morphologic characteristics and the physical and chemical properties of soil samples were analyzed. The soil samples were removed in four topossequences spread in the catchments, and also samples of sediments from the bottom of the reservoir were collected, allowing observing and classifying the soil and the water as of salt present. Also the geometric parameters of the reservoirs were evaluated. With these obtained results, it was possible to observe that the soil presented greater salt concentrations in the bottom parts of the topossequences and upstream-downstream of the catchment. The chloride and the calcium were the most abundant soluble salts, responsible for the classification and for the higher salinity tendency over sodicity. As for the reservoirs it was verified that their geometric parameters have a tendency to favor the salinization of their waters, defined by their open and shallow forms that enlarge the effects of evaporation and the difficulties of the reservoirs overflow, which reduces the withdrawal of salt.
