RESUMO

The conception of the ASTER sensor by the end of the 1990s brought new benefit to the mapping of hydrothermal alteration zones, initiating a promising phase in remote sensing of earthly resources. Recent studies utilizing this sensor for mineralogical mapping have proved its effectiveness. This study tested the hyperspectral classification in ASTER multispectral sensor images from the San Antonio de los Cobres region, in Salta, Argentina. Quantitative analysis of reflectance spectra in the shortwave infrared range (SWIR) allowed the mineralogical characterization of the alteration mineralogy. Image processing techniques for spectral classification were applied, such as SAM (Spectral Angle Mapper) and MTMF (Mixture Tuned Matched Filtering), resulting in classification images for the alteration minerals, from which it was possible to infer hydrothermal zoning associated with the Cerro Aguas Calientes area. Both techniques showed efficience in mapping hydrothermal alteration minerals. It has been demonstrated that, despite the reduced numbers of spectra bands available in the ASTER sensor, it is possible to identify the presence of some alteration minerals, which makes that sensor an important instrument for mineral exploration activities.
