RESUMO

The importance of ornamental rocks in architecture is historical; either to the internal areas or to the external ones. Thus, in this study, covering alterability and durability regarding with stony plates in located land external faÃades in the sea shore of Recife are discussed. The civil construction industry uses, in workmanship, the most varied types of coverings, amongst several, the stony plates. The aesthetic alterations of ornamental rocks are more and more frequent, even in new buildings. These problems, apparently of difficult solution occur in some Brazilian cities, mainly in those ones located in littoral regions. According to this context, one has accomplished a bibliographical revision with the purpose of back grounding the argument concerning the issues related to the alteration of used stony plates on external coverings of buildings. One knows that, in a general way, the stony plates tend to modify through the exposition the new environmental and use conditions, and that this process of alteration can be sped up when facing climatic aggressiveness, the action of the atmospheric pollutants and the adoption of inadequate constructive procedures and maintenance. Such factors modify the aesthetic characteristics of the covering, causing the depreciation of the property and the disfigurement of the architectural landscape. The surveys carried through âin situâ display diverse types of stony plateâs deterioration, in different intensities and forms (oxidation, loss of brightness, efflorescence, staining and others). The accomplished analyses and assays relate these alterations with the intrinsic characteristics of each rock, attributing basic role to constituent minerals, to the physical properties, the micro fissuring and the primary alteration of the rock. Also, one had considered the referring extrinsic factors to installation environments of the stony plates, indicating the local level of aggressiveness. The action of time, in set with the intrinsic and extrinsic factors of the displayed materials, conditions the durability of the plates. Considering the research results it can be concluded that the carbonate rocks (marbles and calcareous rocks) are susceptive to the processes of alteration in relation to the silicate rocks (granites), had to a large extent, to its mineral constitution, displaying, therefore, a lesser durability
