RESUMO

Purpose: To evaluate the isoflavones effects in postmenopausal patients. Methods: Randomized double blind controlled trial, included 79 women in menopause, attended in the climaterical ambulatory of the Centro Integrado de SaÃde Amaury de Medeiros, in Recife-PE, Brazil, from July 2002 to June 2003. The patients were divided in two groups: The first group was composed of thirty-one women using isoflavones on regular basis (100 mg/day), and the second group was composed of forty-eight women-using placebo. The inclusion criteria were in postmenopausal patients, presence of hot flushes and FSH >40mUI/ml. The exclusion criteria were the women in use of hormone replacement therapy, patients with previous breast and endometrial cancer, abnormal uterine bleeding, tromboembolic disease, chronic alcoholism, disease of the gastrointestinal tract and patients in diet with soy its derivates. During three months, were assessed the menopausal Kupperman index (MKI), hormonal and lipid profiles, the endometrial thickness and the body mass index (BMI). For statistical analysis, t test, χ2 tests and non-parametric Mann-Whitney test were used. Results: The median MKI values decreased in women on isoflavones from 29 to 12, and in women on placebo from 32 to 16,5. At the end of the study, on isoflavones group, the women had total decrease of the hot flushes in 25,8% versus 18,7% compared to placebo; parcial decrease in 38,7% versus 39,6% and no answer in 35,5% versus 41,7% respectively. It was not observed any alteration in the FSH, and estradiol levels, lipidic profile, endometrial thickness and IMC between the two studied groups. Conclusion: The isoflavones, in manipulated capsules containing 40% of standardized extract, wasnât significantly superior to placebo in reducing menopausal symptoms. No alteration was observed in FSH, estradiol, lipidic profile, endometrial thickness nor BMI between the two groups
