RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the effects of undernutrition during lactation on the morphology of the larynx in rats aged 22 and 60 days old. Methods: Male Wistar rats (n=48) were randomly divided into two groups according to their motherâs diet during lactation: control (casein 17%) and undernourished (casein 8%). At weaning, all animals were fed with standardized chow. Half of each group was killed at 22nd day of life, while the other half was killed at 60th day of life. Body weight was daily measured, and gain of body weight and the growth rate were calculated. Larynx was removed and its dimensions were recorded with a digital paquimeter. It was evaluated: epiglottis-cricoid cartilages (EC), thyroid-cricoid cartilages (TC), antero-posterior (AP) and latero-lateral (LL). Histology analyses were performed by hematoxylin-eosin stain. Larynx was qualitatively analyzed by a subdivision into supraglottis, glottis e infraglottis. Vocal cords were also analyzed in terms of dimensions of their epithelium, nucleus, and layers using the Scion Image, Beta 4.0.2 program. Results: Animals from undernoutrished mothers during lactation showed a reduction in the gain of body weight throughout the experiment. There was a decrease in the growth rate during lactation, but not during the recovery of the diet. At 22nd day, undernourished pups showed a lower antero-posterior and latero-lateral dimensions of larynx than control. At 60th days, there was no difference between groups. There was a reduction in the size of epithelium, diameter of the nucleus, and intermediary layers of the vocal cords in animals of 60 days of age. Conclusion: Undernutrition during lactation induced changes in the microstructures of the larynx of the undernourished animals, even after the nutritional recovery. The macro-structure of the larynx showed an immediate reduction in the horizontal dimensions, but there was a long-term recovery. Our results indicate that the restriction of nutrients during the critical period of development induces changes in the morphology of the larynx in a short- and long-term. Studies considering the function of these organs are necessary
