RESUMO

The cerrado harbours about 60 species of small mammals. Despite the frequent occurrence of fire in this vegetation type, few studies have analyzed the effects of fire on the small mammal communities of cerrado areas. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of fire on small mammal communities of two cerrado areas with different fire frequencies. I established trapping grids in two cerrado areas with different times since the last fire (2-3 years or more than 18 years). I sampled both areas monthly or bi-monthly during one year before and one year after a man made fire. Both areas had communities with similar species composition. The more common species were Oryzomys subflavus, Thalpomys cerradensis, Bolomys lasiurus, Calomys callosus e Calomys tener (Rodentia, Muridae). Species composition and diversity indices of the small mammal communities were relatively unaffected by the burns. Thalpomys cerradensis, however, appears to use only areas which burn frequently, and Calomys callosus showed an immediate post-fire increase in population size in both areas. I suggest that different fire frequencies in the cerrado may increase the small mammal diversity in this vegetation type
