RESUMO

This work researched the levels of economic efficiency of dairy farmers in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil; it was adopted a frontier function of estocastic production as the method of analysis. The estimated model kept the fundamental laws of production economy. The efficiency of milk producers from 11 regions of Minas Gerais was estimated, totaling 614 producers. They were grouped in three technologic levels, A, B and C; A being the one with producers with the highest level of technology; B, intermediate and C the level with little technologic presence. Expenditures with veterinarian products had an inverse behavior with the value of production for levels A and B, what indicates an irrational use of this factor or problems with the health of the animals. The value of the herd, operated by its opportunity cost, indicated that increases in its values generate increments of the value of dairy farmersâ revenues for the three technologic levels. With regard to the economic efficiency averages, the highest average, 76 percent, was obtained in the technologic level C, indicating that productive unities with little technology optimize their costs to generate higher revenues. The producers of level C, notwithstanding, reached the smallest average, 68 percent, what may have been caused by the sub-utilization of the available technology. When separated by volume of milk production, the producers with the highest volumes presented the most elevated averages of economic efficiency, whereas the ones with the smallest outputs had the worst average, corroborating the association between scale and economic efficiency. Among the regions of Minas Gerais, Central Mineira and Jequitinhonha stood out as the ones with the highest averages of economic efficiency. As variablesn explaining economic efficiency, those related to productivity and output volume as well as the value of animals of the production system stood out. The variable that indicated an inverse relationship with the economic efficiency indexes, the expenditures with veterinarian products, may indicate that the health condition of the herds has endangered the economic efficiency of the production systems.
