RESUMO

This study focuses on the ecology of Caiçara populations regarding the use of natural resources and its relation with the local diet. The use of natural resources is an important feature of the Caiçara s livelihood, wbich is bistorically linked to the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in the Adantic Forest, through fisheries, agriculture and plant collection activities. The main objectives of this study are: 1) to investigate the use of natural resources among three Caiçara communities from the southem coast of São Paulo State; and 2) to evaluate the influence of recent changes in Caiçara s livelihood on the use of natural resources and the Caiçara diet. The first chapter presents a characterization of the studied populations in the framework of the estuarine region of 19uape-Cananéia. The second chapter focuses on the main natural resources used by the local populations, both in terrestrial and aquatic environments, as well as on changes on the use of natural resources due to the growing tourism activity in the region. Food preferences, avoidances, and choices regarding animal protein items are discussed in the third chapter. The Caiçara s diet, including comparlsons among families with different socio-economic profiles, and the nutritional quality of the diet are analyzed in the fourth chapter. A comparative analysis between Caiçaras from the Adantic Forest and Caboclos from the Amazon Forest is outlined in the final chapter. Caiçaras from the studied communities have a detailed knowledge about the natural resources. However, tbis Lknowledge can be lost when livelihood activities associated with local resources are abandoned. Reduction on the food self-sufficiency and an increasing dependency on purchased or industrialized items on the diet were observed. As the local knowledge about the environment is lost, the resilience of the studied populations decreases, especially when activities not directly related to the natural resources increase. The Caiçara populations, as well as the Caboclos populations from the Amazon. have a paramount role in the conservation and deve1opment of Brazilian Rain Forests. In this sense. the human ecology is an important analytical toollinking ecological and social approaches
