Do vÃnculo à informalidade: imagens e representaÃÃes do trabalho e do emprego no Brasil

RESUMO

The present work aims to contribute to the understanding of changes in the world of work and their repercussions in Brazil. The study focuses on the ânewâ or âtransformedâ social representations of work, in the context of structural unemployment and globalization. The main objectives that guided the investigation were: a) to identify the impact of changes in the world of work on the meanings and attitudes concerning the concept of âworkâ itself and that of âjobâ; b) to investigate the dynamics, the mechanisms and the processes through which such representations are constituted and transformed, building them up comprehensively. The scope of the research was the working population resident in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. The qualitative techniques of focus groups and in-depth interviews were used. The interviewees and group members were categorized according to their situation in the employment market: formal employment, informal employment, employer and unemployed, according to the classification of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the Joint Trade Union Department of Socio-Economic Statistics and Studies (DIEESE). The theoretical references used for the analysis were the sociological concepts of ideology and hegemony (GRAMSCI, ALTHUSSER, LACLAU and MOUFFE) and the psychosocial concept of Social Representations (MOSCOVICI). The interpretation of the results shows that there have been significant changes in the representations of work and employment in the sectors investigated, but that old elements remain and confront the new trends, suggesting that apparently new patterns are in fact old patterns in new clothing.
