RESUMO

Oral polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) four healthy human subjects, with no evidenceof gengival inflammation, were quantified at intervals of 30 minutes 24 hours. When the subjects were awake, the number collected from the mouth showed small variations. During first 3-4 hours, following 8 hours of sleep, the number PMN was smaller than the other periods of the day. During sleep, the number of oral leukocytes was nearly twice the value compared to when the individual was awake, and paradoxically there was a decrease in the migration of PMN from induring of PMN the into the oral cavity. These results suggest that the migration of PMN into the mouth is influenced by sleep
