RESUMO

Colesthasis is the reduction or the interruption of the bile flow to the duodenun. The classification in causes intrahepatic and extrahepatic is very important, being the biliary atresia (BA) the major cause ofthe later. BA is the most severe hepatic disorder in newborns and its etiopathogenesis remains unknown. Viral involvement has been proposed, including the cytomegalovirus (CMV). CMV infection occurs in 1-2% of the newborns and is assymtomatic in more than 90% of the cases. The transmission to the fetus is greater in the primary maternal infection, although a recurrent infection account for the majority of the congenital infections. Laboratory diagnosis is made by serologic methods or by isolation of the virus in fibroblast cell culture. The amplification of DNA by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) makes possible the diagnosis in specimens with few copies ofthe virus...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
