RESUMO

Although the development of twins are very similar to the development of children who are not twins, there is at least one area where they are usually behind the others: the language. And one of the hypothesis which tries to explain this fact is precisely the "twin situation", because a twin, always having the other twin s company, wouldn t feel any objective need for language contact with other people, constituting a factor which would crystallize the deficiency. They would be a "self-sufficient pair" . (LURlA &YUDOVICH, 1987). Here, it intends to verify how the language is situated and developed in this context of a world shared with a brother, that lives the same daily situations. This work is founded on the sociocultural approach to human agency VYGOTSKY s (1987;1988). The objective is to analyse identical twins language development in therapeutic group. Methodologically, a group of six boys, age from 4 to 5 years ( including two pairs of twins) received speech therapy during 22 months. All sessions were videotaped and transcribed. Therapy sessions focused on listening, telling and re-telling stories from children s literature and drawing and painting related to those stories. The results supported that: the children s dynamic interaction that characterized the listening and telling ( re-telling) of stories in group minimized the twin s reliance on gesture and altemative comunication methods with ultimately more effective language. The conclusion is that twins relationship is a powerful tool to language development in therapeutic group
