RESUMO

The main approach of the present work was the development and validation of an analytical method for the determination of volatile contaminants from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging, using the headspace dynamic concentration technique in the extraction stage and chromatographic techniques for identification and quantification. The method was validated using gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC/FID). Gas chromatography connected with mass spectrometer (GC-MS) was used as technique of confirmation in the substance identification of PET packaging. In the stage of system optimization and validation, toluene, chlorobenzene, benzaldehyde and limonene had been used as class representative of polar and apolar volatile substances. The best condition of extraction was 155°C for 90 minutes. The developed method was used to evaluate two washing processes of PET post-consumer packaging currently employed in Brazil. The results indicated that volatile contaminants are not totally removed by the evaluated washing processes, potentially causing risk to consumer health if the recycled material will be used in direct contact with foods.
