RESUMO

The objective was to evaluate the effect of a homeopathic combination on dairy cow performance. Thirty-two Holstein cows, with more than 60 days in lactation, were paired blocked based on milk yield and randomly assigned to one of two treatments for 63 days of a comparison period, following a 14-day standardization period. Variables measured at the end of the standardization period were used as covariate in the statistical analysis model. Treatments were: Daily supplementation of 150 g of a homeopathic combination (Hypothalamus, 10-30; Colibacilinum, 10-30; Streptococcus Beta Hemolyticum, 10-60, Streptococcus Uberis, 10-60; Phytolacca, 10-60; Calcium Phosphoricum, 10-30; Natrum Muriaticum, 10-60; Urtica Urens, 10-30, Silicea Terra, 10-400) in mineral vehicle or 150 g of the same mineral vehicle (Control). Supplementation with homeopathy increased milk protein content from 3.09 to 3.19% (P=0.01) and tended to increase the daily secretion of protein from 0.737 to 0.776 kg (P=0.10). The trend for declined digestibility of fiber and organic matter (P=0.10), in similar ratio of urinary allatoin to creatinine content (P=0.32), suggested that there was an increase in the efficiency of ruminal microbial protein synthesis. Increased digesta passage rate, capable of increasing the flow of dietary metabolizable protein to the animal, would be a plausible explanation for the increased milk protein secretion. Silicea Terra may have induced this response. There was a trend for increased milk somatic cell count in homeopathized cows (P<0.09). There was no detectable treatment effect on the immune response assessed by plasma rabies antibody content in response to vaccination (P=0.40). The homeopathy did not affect the plasma cortisol content following stress induced by percutaneous aspiration of the ventral rumen (P=0.59). Supplementation of dairy cows with the homeopathic combination increased milk protein content.
