RESUMO

In this work we investigate the effectiveness of selective discard of cells and selective discard of packets in a multiplexer subject to a long-range dependent process. 1n this way we evaluate diverse selective discard mechanism under different traffic parameters such as the network load the Hurst parameter variance and different packet sizes and also under distinct configurations scenarios such as different buffer sizes. We found out that the Complete Sharing disciplines is clearly worth adopting, whereas Complete Sharing with Guaranteed Queue Minimum may be not. Furthermore we show that the choice of push out policy may significantly impact the perceived QoS. We show that a four-class mechanism demands less buffer space than a two-class mechanism for the transport of the same load. We introduce a novel packet discarding policy called Longuest-Packet-1n (LP1), which maximizes the cell goodput and we show that LP1 not only provides the highest cell goodput but also produces the highest packet goodput under a short-range dependent process composed of long packets
