RESUMO

Abstract In order to study the electromyographic activity of the masseter, temporal anterior and digastric in swallowing with and without dental occlusion, we evaluated 43 women, aged between 19 and 34 years (mean 23 years), students from the Undergraduate or Graduate Department of Speech Therapy of the Federal University of São Paulo. All had permanent teeth, stable occlusion without dental mutilation. Were not included in this study, subjects with anterior open bite and / or lateral and mandibular prognathism with a history of any type of orthognathic surgery, temporomandibular disorders and functional habits (tooth clenching and nocturnal bruxism). Was not taken into account the type of dental occlusion. We performed surface electromyography of muscles: temporal - anterior, masseter and digastric - anterior belly of the left and right, during rest, swallowing of liquid and solid. We adopted the criteria of RIX (1946) to evaluate and classify swallowing in normal and abnormal. This evaluation divide the sample into two groups: GI: Group with normal swallowing (with dental occlusion) and GII: Group with altered swallowing (no dental occlusion). Swallowing was assessed by direct observation of the oral cavity, with the aim of detecting the presence or absence of dental occlusion at the time of swallowing. Was observed swallowing the liquid (10 ml of water) and solid (raisins), which was chewed and then swallowed. Our results showed that the swallowing of liquid, a statistically significant difference between the two groups in the left digastric muscle, the swallowing of solid statistically significant difference between the two groups in the right masseter and digastric right and left. The results obtained showed that the highest average, at rest, occurred more frequently in the group with swallowing with dental occlusion in the three muscles studied. In liquid swallowing, the highest averages occurred more frequently in the group without swallowing dental occlusion, with the exception of the temporalis muscle and swallowing of solid, the highest averages occurred more frequently in the group without swallowing dental occlusion in the three muscles studied.
