RESUMO

The following thesis aims to analyze the decadence of the Carmelite Order of Pernambuco facing the regalistic politics during the Imperial government and its restoration after 1894, when Spanish Carmelites arrive. In this perspective, we studied the historical context of the Imperial period when restrictive politics were imposed to ancient monastic institutes of the Benedictines, the Fransciscanos and the Carmelites, leading to empty temples. Accessing documents about the Carmelite decadence of the Carmo of Pernambuco provided us a better understanding about the reduction of the influence of the regulars in the local society and at the same time about the implementation of the restauration project of this religious order in Pernambuco during the Republic proclamation. We realized that in attempt to recover the orderâs vigour the remainder friars of Recife asked for help from the province Doce Nome de Maria that sent some religious groups to support them. The arrival of these religious men permitted the reorganization of the Carmelite Order of Pernambuco contributing to consolidate the romanization of the Catholic Church. During the elaboration of this thesis, mails, official letters, statutes and patrimonial books from the Carmelites Order of Pernambuco were used
