RESUMO

This work provides an analysis of the piece "La Plaza del Diamante" (Diamond Square) by Merce Rodoreda. From the main character, Natalia, the female protagonist of the novel, we have glimpses into the lives of women during the Spanish Civil War. As readers, we feel the challenge and have the opportunity of filling the spaces offered in the text, based on our own experiences, since as one reads, one is able to discover the potential of the text offering elements for new transformations and adaptations. The analysis is situated within the feminist literary critique, employing gender as an analytical category that reveals, in the different forms of literature such as the creation of discourse, the use of symbolism and structures which institutionalize the inferiority, the subordination and the exclusion of women from the roles of power. Amongst the institutions responsible for hierarchical relationships created between men and women, one will find the institution of war, since it is during wartime where the roles and functions of the sexes are determined. In the text, the relationship between doves and war helps to unfold the hypocrisies and ambiguities that exist within the war machine. The use and manipulation of discourses and religious symbols also contribute towards the subordination and submission of women, both in the social and familial spheres
