RESUMO

Much money is annually dispended in the maintenance of hydraulic turbines used in electric power generation due to the cavitational damage. The suitability of flame thermal sprayed coatings on the maintena cee of these equipments was evaluated in terms of its cavitational damage resistance. Hardness, roughness, accelerated ultrasonically induced cavitation and adherence tests were performed, as well as optical and scanning electron microscopy, microprobe ehemical analysis, and X-ray difractometry. The results showed that the flame sprayed coating lamellar structure seems to favor the cavitational damage and only fused coatings after spraying have some potential to be applied in turbine s maintenance. This fusion made with a gas tungsten are may improve the coating performance and allows its application on heavy equipments. The mechanism of mass loss were evidenced by scanning microscopy observations of the cavitated surfaces and of the material detached from the coating during cavitational tests
