RESUMO

In the Brazilian market, lettuce is the main leafy vegetable, both in terms of yield and consumption. The states of SÃo Paulo and Minas Gerais are the chief producers. The difficulties found in adopting lettuce cultivation in a protected environment are: the lack of specific informations about the timely moment to irrigate and the amount of water to be applied linked to an economic analysis of the process. The present work was intended technic and economic valuation of the effect of different irrigation depths upon the yield of two lettuce cultivars type crisped, cultivated in a protected environment in the region of Lavras (MG). The experiment was set up in greenhouse at the âUniversidade Federal de Lavrasâ in the period of September to November of 2005. The randomized block design in 2 x 4 factorial scheme, with four replicates, was employed. The treatments consisted of two lettuce cultivars, VerÃnica and HortÃncia, and four irrigation depths, 75, 100, 125 and 150% of water replacement. The results enabled to conclude the two cultivars of lettuce presented the same trend as regards water consumption throughout production cycle; higher yields (total and commercial), plants with higher number of leaves and higher fresh mass of leaves were obtained with the application of the irrigation depth of 240 mm (121.2% of water replacement); the stem length increased whereas the dry matter content of leaves reduced linearly as related with the water depths applied; the higher in water use efficiency (171.8 Kg.ha-1.mm-1) took place with the application of depth 198 mm, corresponding 100% of water replacement; the maximum commercial yield, 33.225 Kg.ha-1, was estimated from the application of the depth of 244.9 mm (123.7% of water replacement); the economically optimum depth was estimated in 244.2 mm, resulting into a commercial yield practically equal to the physical maximum one.
