RESUMO

The Brazilian milk system agribusiness is inserted in the economic scenery where market situations, typical of imperfect competition, happen. In this context, the production development segment that results at the availability of raw material in great quantity and low cost is demanded. The production determination cost, although, many times is questioned, under allegation that calculated value doesn t reflect the reality. There are several reasons for this, but one of the main, refers to the criterion used in the methodology. Because of this, the present research had as an objective, to compare two checking cost methodologies and identify the milk production scales in the main states that produce milk in Brazil, that are: Minas Gerais, GoiÃs, SÃo Paulo, Paranà and Rio Grande do Sul. Besides the milk production cost in the mentioned states and the function of cost production of milk activity was estimated considering two different methodologies, determined by: âmilk activity costâ and âmilk center costâ. Therefore the technical and economic results of 162 country estates located in those main states were analyzed from August 2000 to July 2001. The results indicated that the producers that were studied, presented a good productivity. The cost investigation by the methodology of "milk center cost" made possible a bigger accuracy related to the analysis of the total medium cost in the milk production, making clear that when accurate, only the cost related to the milk subsystem, the price received was enough to remunerate the producer in the states evaluated. It was clear that earnings occurrence with the production scale, having in mind the medium cost reduction to bigger production averages,as well the profits that indicates the growing scales and economics scale indicating profits with the production development. The results make clear that the study is formed by producers that look for greater productive efficiency and that there is an even profit possibility when talking about better combination, allocation and improvement of the productive and management resources. The indicators analysis of scale economy selected through two different methodologies pointed that the reduction possibility of medium cost is more significant for the production global system, that is, to the milk activity, than to the milk subsystem making clear that the other subsystems of the global activity presented a worse use of the resources than the milk production subsystem.
