RESUMO

The present study, of phenomenological qualitative nature, was intended to unveil the phenomenon "Coping with the premenstrual tension syndrome". The interviewed subjects included six women, age range 18 to 44 years, three of them single, one married with children, one divorced with children, and one of them separated with children. The following guiding questions were used in this context: "How is it for you to have the premenstrual tension syndrome?"; "Describe the way you cope with that event". Discourses were analyzed in accordance with the existential phenomenological referents based in the Merleau Ponty and Martin Heidegger philosophers’studies. Six thematic units were seen to emerge from this analysis which converged towards three large categories: The body existing in relation with the world, Living with the anxiety caused by the situation, and The need to be cared for. These categories disclosed the fact that those women are found to be at the threshold of this discomfort and that this condition is related to the body which seeks to adequate itself to the psychoemotional fluctuations, its experiences and consequently to its personal experience, and, at the same time, to the social experience perceived as "being there and "being with". The building of this study could disclose new paths to assist and care for the premenstrual tension syndrome shown by those women, and also, concentrate the teaching within the human/existential dimension.
