RESUMO

In the international panorama the notion of social cooperatives is directly related to the concept of social enterprise. These organisations are defined as enterprises that seek social assistance and inclusion of underprivileged people through work. The first experiences of this nature in Brazil were inspired by the antimanicomial movement, under strong influence of the Italian model of social enterprise, where the main form of work organisation comes from cooperative models. The present study aims to strengthen the debates and practises around social cooperatives in Brazil, trying to delineate the scenery these enterprises create in Brazil. Three main questions grounded this research: How are characterised the social cooperatives in Brazil? Who are the main social actors involved in these enterprises? How is the articulation between these different social actors in the constitution of the field built? To conduct this research, three sources of information were used: 1) visitation of Brazilian and Italian social cooperatives, 2) documentation research on psychiatric practises in Brazil, and 3) analysis of the Solidary Economy Information System (SIES/SENAES/MTE) database. The research permitted the elaboration of a preliminary framework for the Brazilian social cooperatives, allowing us to trace the main characteristics of these enterprises and the challenges these organizations face both in practise and theory. Furthermore, this study offers subsidies to better comprehend the particulars of the social cooperativeness that has been growing in the national scenery, from the interface with the field of solidary economy.
