RESUMO
The basic aim of the present work was to extend the application limits of the feedforward technique to microwave amplifiers, mainly for multi-octave operation. It has been shown that it is possible to make use of feedforward linearization for broadband networks (such as CATV) and optical communication circuits as well. For the sake of completeness, this work begins, just after a brief introduction, with a review of the foundations of power amplifier nonlinearities. Also, the most usual non-linearity analysis methods are presented, their strong and weak points, and conditions of application, in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3, several linearization methods are discussed and compared. Special attention is paid to Section 3.2, where RF pre-distortion is discussed. Sub-Section 3.2.2 presents this author s contribution to that subject, that results in a simplification of the hardware involved. The potential of the feedforward technique arises, becoming itself a motivation for Chapter 4. The fourth Chapter presents a review of the feedforward technique, pointing out the effects (on the linearized amplifier performance) ofthe non-ideal behavior of each feedforward-system bullding block. Chapter 5 discusses the usual feedforward system concepts, for microwave amplifiers. Starting from this point, different ways of implementation are proposed, aiming at multioctave operation and a fully electrical controlled system. To make this possible, an analysis and simulation method has been proposed, using simply linear circuit simulation software. A design procedure is also presented. This chapter is the core of this thesis. Chapter 6 describes the validation prototype that is developed, together with the measured results. The final conclusions are given on the last chapter, Chapter 7. Three Annexes close the work
