RESUMO

The present work has the purpose of establishing a relationship between higher cognitive processes, such as perception, attention and memory and written language learning. This relationship will be approached through the perspective of educational practices, that is to say, what kind of classroom activities may create possibilities, or not, for the acquisition of knowledge. The data contained in this work was collected during two school years, from the beginning of the first grade until the end of the second, in a private school of Campinas. The experience inside the classroom made it possible to investigate how reading and writing activities are carried on in this specific context. The observation, not only of the pupils performance, but also the teachers attitudes and discourse, provided the conditions to think about some aspects of the educational practices that may affect knowledge acquisition, as it was mentioned before. When it concern the neuropsychological aspects discussed in this dissertation, it is important to remark that the theoretical perspective of cognitive development assumed here is based mainly on the concepts developed by A.R.Luria. In respect to the relationship between learning and development also presented in this work, they are based on some central ideas of Vygotsky s theory, given the property, to our purposes, of his considerations concerning the importance of the social and cultural context in which the child lives, including here her interactions with adult subjects, as elements that may contribute to her knowledge acquisition
