RESUMO

: In São Sebatião, northern coast of São Paulo State, two boulder fields (Praia Grande and Ponta do Baleeiro) were monitored monthly during 1990 and 1991. characterization of environmental conditions was performed. The following parameters were studied: water temperature and salinity, hydrodynamics, abrasion power of sand and habitat heterogeneity. The boulder features studied were: underside area (small: 20 ? 30 cm2 and large: 160 - 220 cm2), location (medium or low intertidal), porosity and the intensity of disturbance caused by waves (displacement and overturning). Ten boulders of each size, on both tide levels and rocky shores were permanently labeled and the specific composition and percentage cover of community evaluated. Hydrodynamics was higher in Praia Grande as well as the distance boulders were dislodged; boulder porosity and sand abrasion were similar in both rocky shores. Small rocks were displaced and overturned more frequently than large ones, regardless of the tide level they were placed. Encrusting communities under the boulders were composed mainly by sessile organisms either compound (Bryozaoa, Ascidiacea, Porifera, Cnidaria) or simple Polycchaeta e Bivalvia). All groups, except by serpulids, had higher percentage cover in the low intertide and on large boulders. Abundance of Ascidiacea and Serpulidea were similar in both shores, Bryozoa and Porifera were more abundant in Ponta do Baleeiro and Bivalvia in Praia Grande.
