Compressão de banco de dados em ambientes móveis com recursos computacionais limitados

RESUMO

Due to increasing popularization of mobile devices with limited computacional resources such as handhelds and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and inherent feature of limitation of resources present in such devices, the use of an architecture to optimize the used memory and the processing power of such devices is very important. This work presents a compression strategy to be applied over data existing in such devices to optimize the memory space. The used framework implements a storage architecture oriented to column in which data existing in the same column belong to the same logical record. Besides that, the compression strategy used - formed by several lightweight techniques in which to each data type a different technique is used - matchs perfectly with that kind of storage architecture. The experimental results show that the use of a compression strategy offers a significant improvement in use of memory space without problems in performance of the system.
