RESUMO

This paper presents susceptibility charters of occurring expansive and collapsible soils, as well as the outcomes from edometric assays of soils in the municipality of Petrolina-PE, this municipality, which is in a rolling economic expansion, lies in the interior place for mid SÃo Francisco; a region characterized by a semi-arid climate with rain taking place for a short period as opposed to long bouts without rain what turns out to be favorable for the formation of expansive and collapsible soil. The charters have been elaborated according to the methodology by FERREIRA (2000) which is built on the overlaying of susceptibility charters on collapse and swelling based on thematic maps from the geology, pedology and climate. Expansive and collapsible soil mapping was carried out by means of a geo-processing program, namely ESRIÂS ArcView. The charters show susceptibility of occurring expansive and collapsible soils in the municipality of Petrolina which were ranked as of high, medium and low susceptibilities and were referred to as red, yellow and green, respectively â the municipality of Petrolina was found to have 40% of its surface with susceptibilities ranging from medium to high towards being collapsible and 25% prone to being expansive. Laboratory assay outcomes of soil collected from the Privà Village condo, in Petrolina, is presented. Single and double edometric assays were carried out along with several methods in order do assess the collapsing and swelling potential of soils. Samples disclosed collapsing of up to 13.82%
