RESUMO

In the present work the pedigree method was used to estimate the phenotypic variance components for grain yield and plant habit. A segregating population from the cross between BRS TalismÃ, (growing habit III, carioca grain type) and BRS Valente (growing habit II and black grain) was used. Sixty-four plants were randomly sampled from the F2 to generate F2:3 progenies. From each F2:3 progeny two plants were taken individually to originate 128 F3:4 progenies. The same procedure was adopted to generate 256 F4:5 progenies which were assessed in the rainy season of 2004/2005, in a 16 x 16 simple lattice design. For grain yield the data were obtained as total yield of the plot and the within variance was estimated taking a random sample of 10% of the plot, evaluating the plants individually. In the case of plant habit a scale varying from 1 to 5, (1 = upright plant and 5 = prostrate plant) was used. The seeds from each progeny were harvested in bulk originating the F4:6 progenies, which were evaluated in the same way as the F4:5 progenies, during the dry season of 2005. From the expected mean square of the individual analysis, it was estimated the components of the environmental and genetic variance using the weighted interactive least square method. Genetic gains from selection and broad sense and realized heritabilities for both characters were also estimated. For grain yield per plant, the environmental variance within plots was the main component of the phenotypic variance among progenies. It was stated the need for a better experimental control aiming to improve the efficiency of the breeding program. The additive variance predominated for grain yield and the dominance variance for plant habit. The use of the pedigree method for estimating the components of phenotypic variance is limited by deficient sampling of plants for composing the next generations. The plant habit was prejudiced when the selection considered just grain yield.
