Competição e estratégia: uma análise do curso de zootecnia da Pontíficia Universidade Católica do Paraná

RESUMO

Brazilian higher education institutions are experiencing times of transformation and challenges. Private institutions by functioning in a very competitive environment are subjected to fluctuations in the demand for their academic programs requiring management strategies to keep the programs running. The purpose of this work is to examine the Animal Husbandry Program of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná seeking strategies that leads toward its feasibility. The study is characterized as a case study with focus on the Animal Husbandry of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná. Data were collected by applying a questionnaire to 33 faculty members and two administrators including the department chairman and the dean of the school where the program is housed. The analysis of the data indicated that for the majority (90%) of the respondents the Academic program focus of the study is central to the mission of the University. Attractiveness of the academic program is a strategic element for the participants. For 48,5% of the participants of the study the experimental farm is the most relevant factor for attractiveness while for 36,5% of the respondents identified the prestige and reputation of the university as the main element to attract students. The analysis also revealed that the academic program is performing in a very competitive environment were two other programs are functioning as well linked to two other institutions. The main conclusion stresses the need to improve substantially the management of the academic program. The areas that deserve greater attention are marketing, in order to improve the image of the Program, academic quality with better teaching, and institutional policies with more integration between the higher administrative level of the university and the management of the program in areas like academic, finance, and marketing. At the end strategies are proposed seeking the feasibility of the Program in the medium range.
