RESUMO

The present work is intended to analyze and compare two data sets of different sensor systems, acquired in a short period of time and in two opposite seasons (winter and summer). To establish the comparison, two approaches were adopted: the first, qualitative, after visual interpretation of the data allied with information obtained from field work and, on the other hand, a quantitative approach, in which the Kappa coefficient was applied and tested, after the visual interpretation. The results of the first approach matched those obtained with the second ones, showing that merging multisensor imagery is a powerful technique, specially considering its use with some other approaches, like principal component and intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) transforms. One of the conclusions is that it s essential to avoid, as far as possible, large temporal gaps among the merging images. Furthermore, it s critical to make an efficient registration, taking into account that the reference image must be the one acquired by the optical sensor system. Finally, the analysis of main results showed that the SAR/ERS-1 scenes used in this work appear to be more sensitive to permitivity than to roughness, contrary to what was expected. Perhaps, this is because of an imprecise pre-processing of the images.
