RESUMO

This work aims to discuss aspects of brazilian journalism in the years 1950. It has been divided in two parts. One of them focus on showing and analysing some of the meanings added to the changes within journalistic activity, as they were proposed by historical and sociological studies and by many texts which were written by journalists at the period. In this part of the work, the notion of modernity and a perception of history that centers on technical progress are the main points to discussions on the "speeding" in the process of producing the news, on profissionalization and on the limits defined between the "new" and the "old" in journalism. These points were also tied to the idea of neutrality and to the common-place that journalism was becoming, then, more technical and factual, and less ideological. The second part focus on another notion that has been part of the constitution of identities in journalism at that moment: democracy, defined within the limits of liberalism. For discussing the interpretations and projections formulated by journalists and newspapers about the role of press in democratic politics, we analysed what was published in the papers Correio da Manhã and O Estado de S. Paulo, specially during the 1955 crisis, that referred to the election of Juscelino Kubitschek e João Goulart, and during the debates over a new law project regulating press, presented to the Congress by the Government in october 1956. Withing the analysis that make both parts, this work indicates the impossibility of considering technics and ideology, profissionalization and control, democracy and authoritarianism as contradictory terms, according to the meanings that they assumed in that period.
