RESUMO

Although, veterinary dentistry is a relatively new specialization, the dental disease is one of the most common problems affecting pets. Among the affections attacking the buccal cavity the most prevalent is the periodontal disease, whose determinant factor is the bacterial plate. From the 1990, products which have received in their formulation minerals inhibiting the formation of the dental plate. Recognizing the importance and benefits of the buccal health of dogs and the difficulty of controlling the dental hygiene, the objective of this experiment was to evaluate the utilization of coadjuvants in the feeding of dogs aiming at the decrease of the formation of dental scale. The experiment was accomplished in the outbuildings of Total Alimentos S. A. Sixteen (16) dogs of the American Foxhound breed were employed. The methodology employed was the measurement of the occurrence of the dental calculus with seven daysâ adaptation and twenty one daysâ furnishing of each treatment. The treatments were : 1 - Control; 2 - Coadjuvant 1 with a mechanical action; 3 - Coadjuvant 2 with sodium tripolyphosphate and Coadjuvant 3 with sodium hexamethaphosphate. The animals were submitted to the removal of dental scale under general anesthesia and after 21 days they were sedated and the measurement of the bacterial plate formed through the use of markers (dyesfuchsine) was performed. On the basis of the results obtained, one can conclude that biscuits only with a mechanical action did not prove effective in delaying the appearance of the bacterial plate, they not being recommended as a way of prevention. In turn, the buccal coadjuvants containing polyphosphates, whether as tripolyphosphate whether as sodium hexamethaphosphate showed an action both effective and significant in the decrease of the formation of dental calculus, they being recommended as form alternative to brushing.
