RESUMO

A remote sensing methodology was applied to spectrally characterize euçalyptus dyeback in the Rio Doce Valley (SPEVRD), Minas Gerais State. Spectroradiometric data, 35mm color and color infrared aerial photography and TM/LANDSAT data were used to that characterization. Significant spectral differences between healthy and damaged samples were verified through spectroradiometric analysis. Both color infrared aerial photographs allowed the identification of eucalyptus dyeback, however the latter presented the best performance. TM/LANDSAT data were submitted to different types of digital processing such as: suppression of atmospheric effects, contrast strech, band ratio and principal component transformation. TM wave bands were also statistically analysed to define the best product to discriminate between healthy and damaged eucalyptus. The results showed the following decreasing performance for the individual bands: 4, 3, 1, 5, 2, 7. TM4/TM3 ,ratio however, proved to be better than the best ,individual TM band. A qualitative analysis of PC2 showed that this product provided the best visual discrimination capability between healthy and damaged eucalyptus. The study led to the following conclusions: the methodology is suitable for eucalyptus dyeback characterization in flat terrain; results discouraged the application of this methodology in montaneous region.
