RESUMO

ABSTRACT Referred by some analysts as one of the major controversial subjects in Brazilian Republic History, the proposal of quotas has provoked strong reactions in the academic community and guaranteed the racial issue a common place in the repertoire of debates of our society. More than anything, the controversy related to the proposal has convoked or compelled people from different origins, knowledge and practice areas, to enter the same space the political arena despite the power differentials acting there. As they transformed the university into a stage of conflicts and claims, the quotas have forced the dialogue between theory and politics. At this moment, enter the scene a rare historical register the rich aggregate from the studies about racial relations developed in the country and the vigorous experience of the social militancy, in equally legitimate conditions. In the aim of analyzing this specific scene and some academics discourses on it, this work examines a part of the legacy of Brazilian social sciences related to the racial theme, the history of the Black Movement in the country and the interfaces between these two instances, as well as the appropriations and reinventions operated here on the idea of affirmative action in relation to its main cradle, the United States. The transformation of the University into an object of reflection constitutes the background to the analysis and its focus relies on the role or the uses of the ideas, many of them enrooted in what has become conventionally named as the Brazilian peoples essence, in this process. This investigation suggests, in the present, a dislocation from the polemic about the causes of the racial inequality to new conflicts related to the ideology of racial democracy, which, in a countermovement on the introduction of quotas at higher education, resurges transfigured.
