RESUMO

A city or a town cannot be understood only through its political, economic and administrative dimensions. The stage for the performance of peoples lives also retains other dimensions which are as vital and as full a part of its reality as those just mentioned. Among a variety of dimensions which is worth investigation there also are some expressions of subjectivity resulting from the experience one has had in his space of dwelling. Various similar fields to Urban Development besides the repertoire that Architecture and Town Planning offer have currently brought light to bear on such conceptions. Thus, the discussion about the affective relations of people with the city has been pursued and makes use of the case study on the town of Barreiros which is located in the state of Pernambuco. This study sets out to identify the land marks and the representative places that are part of the memory of the population of Barreiros and to understand their meanings and uses. Narratives are presented in the results arising from an interpretation of the Sources. To do so, the existing textual records, held in Barreiros, of the musicians, poets and writers have been used. Previous knowledge of most of these documents as well as the various possibilities for analyzing them and the qualitative pertinence of their content ensures that they should be selected for a methodological approach. Besides their historic and cultural significance, it is assumed that these spaces are important because of their individual psychic make-up and because of the well-being of the collectivity which they provide; however such significance sometimes eludes technical and scientific expertise, such as that held by architects and town planners. However these professionals also need to know a town from its memories and the affection it engenders and therefore to consider them as part of the everyday exercise of their professional activities in order to make their studies and professional practice even closer to what is the essence of mankind
