RESUMO

The La Plata River basin is the second basin of South America after the Amazon basin and is the fifth in a world-wide level. It is located at an international area that occupies territories of Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia, areas of great economic activity. In the present work, the hydrologic budget was studied, analysing the atmospheric and terrestrial components, following Peixoto and Oort (1992), to investigate the behaviour of CPTEC/COLA AGCM. The study of the hydrologic budget variables showed the necessity to divide the area in two sectors, Northern and Southern, because of their different behaviour. The Northern sector presents an annual cycle better defined than the Southern sector, with a well established humid condition in the summer, when there is development of the ZCAS. In the Southern sector, the hydrologic cycle has less energy, and the variables present a weak annual cycle. In this Southern sector, a period of maximum precipitation is identified at the end of spring, associated with the humidity intrusion. There is an intrusion of humidity from the tropical region, southward, that feeds both sectors. Flux confluence is simulated on Southeast Brazil during the summer, and over northern Argentina in the spring. The hydrologic balance also shows monthly variations in the climatological analysis. It is noted the existence of more moisture flow from the Amazon region to the Southern sector during the El Niño phase than during La Niña phase. Over the Amazon region, larger amount of humidity in the atmosphere exists in the El Niño phase than during the La Niña phase, however there is negative anomalies of precipitation in this region. This excess of humidity would be carried out by the draining to the Southern sector region, where the precipitation anomalies during El Niño are positive.
